Dressing for the Hamptons (No Matter Where You Are)

The Hamptons are one of those classic American vacation destinations where urbanites take off to visit each summer, many of whom are escaping the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.

What’s unique about the Hamptons, aside from the natural beauty and the beaches, is the fact that there’s a sense of style that’s specific to the area.

Whether you’re actually planning a getaway to the Hamptons or you just want to dress like you are, here are some style tips to help you along the way:

  • You’ll need a great bag that can pull double or even triple duty. Don’t even think about heading to the Hamptons without a tote bag that you can throw your weekend necessities in and go from a morning on the beach to an afternoon lunch. Oversized bags can look really chic as long as they’re proportional to your body. If you’re petite don’t go for a super-large bag or it could end up overwhelming you and the rest of your outfit. The Hamptons can bring about pretty much anything so stock your bag with all of the essentials so you’re prepared for anything.
  • Once you’ve got your bag your next necessity is going to be your hat. A hat is an important part of your daytime look so choose one that’s chic, versatile and can provide you with some sun protection. In the Hamptons the wider the brim the better so go ultra-glam and chic with a wide hat.
  • Simple, subtle and sophisticated should be your guiding fashion principles if you want to fit in in the Hamptons, or at least look like you would. Take the less is more approach to your accessories and your overall outfits. Rather than opting for looks that are too over the top or Miami-esque, always approach Hamptons fashion as being focused on quality over quantity. That means investing in a great skirt or a pair of white jeans, rather than trying to over-accessorize.
  • Wedges are your friends. So many events, restaurants and gatherings in the Hamptons happen outdoors which means sand and grass—not the ideal elements for wearing stilettos. Swap the spiky heels for either a great pair of eye-catching flat sandals or go for the wedge if you need the added height. Choosing a wedge in a neutral color or one that’s made from a natural material is ideal because they’re versatile and you can transition them from day-to-night.
  • A little bit of layering is probably called for, even in the height of summer. We love pairing things like crisp chambray with fresh white or nautical stripes—for example, tie your favorite chambray shirt over a white maxi dress for a classic look that will also keep you warm during those bonfires as it gets chilly on the beach.

These are a few of our favorite ways to capture that great Hamptons style—what are your ideas?
