Participate in the Neon Fashion Trend with These Tips

Some of the biggest fashion designers and influencers are all about the neon and they have been for a few seasons now, but for everyday women the idea of wearing neon colors can be intimidating. Women typically don’t want to look like a fluorescent light or an 80s aerobics instructor, but they still want to participate in the trend of wearing neons.

So how do you do it?

  • Neon can be great as an underlay to a fabulous skirt or dress. For the past couple of years we’ve seen runway looks that have included sheer or mesh-style shift dresses and skirts that have a bold neon underlay. This brings some balance to the neon and prevents it from being too overwhelming, but you still get that pop of eye-catching color.
  • Pair neon with white. This is a great technique to get a fresh summery look and much like pairing a neon with a neutral cream or taupe, when you pair neon with white it brings down the overall vibrancy of your look. For example, wear a pair of white jeans paired with a  neon blouse or tank and you’ll look fresh and ready for warm weather, as opposed to looking too over-the-top. Not only is white a good balance for neons, but black is as well. Think black jeans or a pair of black shorts as good pairing items for neons.
  • If you’re nervous about the prospect of wearing neon start with small doses. Rather than going for an entire dress that’s neon instead find a great jacket or even a pair of shoes that will add a pop of fun color to your outfit. Some people also like the idea of going for jewelry and accessories that are neon and keeping the rest of their outfit fairly neutral.
  • Be aware that bright colors and in particular neon shades can definitely impact how your body looks—they tend to make you look a bit larger than you are, so if you’re concerned about looking too heavy or too curvy then don’t go with a piece of neon clothing that fits too tightly. It’s also a good idea to balance your body by wearing neon on the smaller part of your body—for example, if you’re top-heavy then go for a pair of neon jeans or pants, and if you feel like you have a bigger bottom half you can do neon on the top to create the illusion of more balance.
  • Neons are a great option if you choose a piece of clothing that juxtaposes the boldness with a classic fit and shape. For example, if you’re going for a neon dress maybe choose one that has a nice A-line cut so that you’re combining a traditional look with an unconventional color. If you choose neons in a cut or shape that’s either too tight or too trendy you may look as if you’ve gone overboard.
