Spotlight On: Madewell

Sometimes even the most daring of fashion lovers also like to stock their closet with the well-made basics that are going to stand the test of time regardless of trends. Madewell is a company that’s created an empire based on that concept.

Madwell has been described as “one of the most promising young brands in mass market fashion right now” by the likes of Racked.

The company is owned by J.Crew which has certainly helped boost its popularity but it’s really coming into its own even without the J.Crew association. The focus of Madewell is really on the use of premium materials and a sense of sophisticated simplicity. There’s also an attempt to push the brand as one that reflects affordable luxury. The clothes are made in the same way as much more high end brands, but you’re going to find them at relatively affordable prices.

While Madewell may be conquering the mass-produced fashion world, they’re still striving to create a socially and environmentally responsible brand. The company partners with local and international charities including organizations like Teach for America and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

When you shop Madewell you’re going to find a nice variety of items—everything from a boho chic maxi to basic tees and tanks that can be worn on a day-to-day basis.

Some of the items we’re loving right now include:

The Lace-Mix top: This effortlessly chic top is a lace peplum style with delicate flutter sleeves that are great for spring. It’s got a hint of sheerness and beautiful embroidered detailing that Madewell says are “inspired by Victorian underpinnings.”

Silk Camisole: This blouse has it all—it’s versatile, wearable in a variety of occasions and simplistically beautiful. It’s just as the name implies with a nice loose, flowy fit and very thin straps that form a Y at the back. It can be worn under a blazer for work, or on its own with a great pair of jeans for a casual, breezy summer look. It comes in three different colors including fog, which is a shade of light blue-grey, true black, and brick dust which is an earthy shade of red-orange.

Dominica Cover-Up Maxi Dress: This maxi dress has it all—bohemian flair, comfort and just a bit of sexiness thanks to the plunging neckline. It’s made from a delicately and beautifully textured fabric and while it may be called a cover-up by Madewell, we think it has much more potential than just being a swim suit cover.

Trelliswork Eyelet Skirt: This skirt is really breezy and effortless. It’s made from eyelet lace with an unlined panel along the front so you can show a bit of leg even though it has a long midi length. It’s got some volume and we love the idea of pairing it with a simple, form fitting tank and a great bag.

The Transport Tote: Speaking of bags, you’ll hardly be able to fathom the fact that you don’t yet have this bag in your life once you see it. This great carry-all is made from a rich, soft leather and you can find it in a variety of single-tone color palettes.
