Style Overalls Without Looking Like a Kindergartner

Overalls are quite trendy right now, but they’re one of those fashion trends that’s tough to really tackle. If you don’t style your overalls just right you’re likely to end up looking more like a tot heading to recess than a high-fashion girl.

Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks to help you style overalls so you’ll chic instead of toddler-like:

  • Pair overalls with a crop top. With this kind of styling you’re combining two of the hottest trends right now but you’re actually balancing both pieces out and avoiding the pitfalls that can come with wearing either item. When you pair overalls with a crop top you get a sexy street-style but you can also cover up your tummy if you’re not entirely sure you’re ready to bare your midriff for the world to see.
  • We love the look of longer overalls with a cuffed hem, because oftentimes the ankle of pants-length overalls can look awkward otherwise. When you cuff your overall ankles you can show off your footwear and look chic and put together at the same time.
  • Layer your look. Overalls don’t just have to be about wearing a basic tee or tank underneath—you can focus not only on what goes underneath your overalls but also what goes on top. Add depth and dimension to your outfit by paring your favorite overalls with a sweater, jacket or scarf for added volume and visual interest.
  • Make a splash with your collar. Overalls, and particularly ones with a low-cut bib, are the perfect opportunity to put the spotlight on a unique neckline or collared shirt. Overalls can look great with uniquely cut collars or even options like the Peter Pan collar.
  • Think about choosing overalls in a different color or fabric choice than just basic denim. For example, some of the chicest street style looks have been with leather overalls, corduroy overalls or overalls in other color choices ranging from vibrant colors to sophisticated black.
  • Add some heels. A lot of overalls look great with a pair of heels and then no one will confuse you with a school child. Think about choosing heels and styling your overalls in a similar way to what you would do with a jumpsuit, since the silhouettes and basic style of both types of clothing are pretty close to one another.
  • Just like a statement collar can work well when paired with overalls, so can a statement necklace. Keep the majority of your outfit simple and then add some pop with an oversized statement necklace.
  • Use overalls as a fun and funky bathing suit cover-up. We love the look that was seen as music festivals like Coachella where shortalls and overalls were paired with a bikini or bathing suit underneath. It’s a fresh, effortless look that anyone can pull off and it’s also a style that’s functional.
