The Top 90s Trends Making a Comeback

For those of us who are in our 20s, particularly our late 20s, all the way up to people in their 40s, we really have an understanding of 90s fashion. We can all think back to everything from Clueless to Party of Five and get a pretty good image of what defined 90s fashion.

Well, it’s time to recall all those 90s inspired trends again, because they’re making a comeback.

Here are some of the top 90s trends that are now completely cool again:

  • Say hello to chokers. Most of us remember those very short necklaces we wore around our  necks, perhaps with a little pendant or jewel in the center and now you can take those back out of the  jewelry box and add them to your favorite outfit.
  • Plaid shirts were a favorite of the grunge crowd thanks to the influence of people like Kurt Cobain and now these shirts, particularly the grunge-favorite oversized shirts, are again making an appearance. Layering plaid shirts with more form fitting tees and tanks and wearing them unbuttoned is a favorite style choice being made by everyone from singers to models.
  • Mom jeans are no longer just for moms—in fact they’re for the cool kids again. Gone are the ultra low-rider jeans that were so popular for the last decade or so. Instead we’re seeing the baggier, high-waisted look of what were once ridiculed and labeled mom jeans.
  • Go ahead and throw on a pair of Doc Martens. They’re no longer just for moody teens or garage band members—they’re for high-fashion celebs and they’re making a huge comeback in terms of street style and fashionable urbanites.
  • Remember those flouncy floral print dresses that everyone from kids to adult women were wearing in the 90s? They’re back with a vengeance. Classic 90s-inspired floral prints are great on rompers as well as short skater-style dresses and they’re being revamped with fresh and modern design details as well.
  • This is one of my personal favorites: the jelly sandal. I remember being in elementary school and begging for a pair of jelly sandals. When I finally got them they were my favorite fashion item I’d ever been lucky enough to own, and now as someone approaching 30 I can feel that same sense of satisfaction from slipping my feet into these fabulously quirky sandals. Flats or chunky block heels are all in style, just as long as they’re jelly.
  • Speaking of chunky block heels, another general shoe trend making an appearance from the 90s is the blocky sandal with wide heels and wide straps. We’re also seeing a lot of platform sandals and slip-ons.
  • If you haven’t noticed how big the crop top trend is you may be living under a rock. If you’re not so sure about baring your midriff now that you’re no longer a teenager, that’s ok too—opt for a longer crop top and a pair of high-waisted jeans or a skirt with a high waist to minimize the amount of skin you’re showing.

What do you think about the comeback of 90s fashion? Are you loving it or could you do without it?
