5 Ways to Dress Up Your Shorts This Summer

Do you love wearing shorts but worry they’re only appropriate for the most casual of occasions and events that typically take place in a backyard?

Think again—shorts, including denim shorts—are a great summer staple piece in your wardrobe and when you style them well they’re great for a variety of occasions, including fairly dressy events.

Here are 5 of our favorite tips to help you dress up your shorts this summer:

  1. Pair shorts with a menswear-inspired blazer. This is one of my favorite ways to not only add a bit of dressiness to your favorite pair of shorts but also to make them look more chic and high-end. A tuxedo-style blazer works well as does any type of jacket with some structure and definition to the shape. Another really great menswear-inspired idea is to pair shorts with a crisp, tailored and classic button-up shirt. Tuck it in and then add a fabulous pair of shoes and you’re ready for nearly any event or setting.
  2. In the opposite style direction of menswear is the concept of putting together an ultra-feminine blouse with your favorite shorts. Choose something with beautiful detailing and then accessorize with some delicate jewelry.
  3. Heels of course can instantly up the dressy factor of any outfit, so pair heels with your shorts or you can also find a great pair of embellished ballet flats or sparkly sandals to add some pop. Gladiator sandals can be great with short since they put so much attention on your legs, as can dainty sandals with jewel detailing. Shorts are actually the ideal thing to wear with a great pair of shoes because so much of the attention can be focused on your footwear, whereas if you’re wearing pants or a longer dress or skirt your shoes can tend to get a bit lost in your outfit.
  4. Just choosing shorts in a particular fabric can do a lot to make them feel more night-time or occasion appropriate. If you want to wear shorts in the evening without looking like you’re headed for a day on the beach, look for a pair made from a material like silk, satin or even lace. Also, look for shorts that are either very tailored with a lot of structure to the shape, or shorts that have a bit of volume. If you want your shorts to be nighttime-appropriate definitely try not to opt for a pair that fits too tightly or that is just too short. A little bit more length can improve the level of versatility of a pair of shorts.
  5. It’s all in your accessories—even if you’re wearing a simple pair of shorts and a top, if you add accessories like a fabulous clutch and a thin, eye-catching belt your outfit will look more pulled together and it’ll look like you’re ready to tackle any situation.
