Practical and Attainable Plus-Sized Fashion Tips

Plus-sized women are taking center stage in the fashion world as more designers, retailers and bloggers are focusing on their needs. If you’re plus-sized you’re no longer relegated to wearing a limited wardrobe consisting mostly of frumpy items in shades of gray and black.

You have a whole world of fashion you can explore that’s made just for you and here are some of our favorite all-time plus-sized fashion tips that are realistic for real girls:

  1. Don’t go too tight—or too loose. The conventional wisdom in the past in terms of plus-sized fashion was always that it was very bad to go for items that are too tight but recommended that you choose items that are looser and even baggier. Skip both of those concepts and instead do what’s best—choose items that fit. Clothes that are either too tight or too loose may make you look even bigger than you are, so really focus on finding that perfect fit when you’re shopping for new items.
  2. Look for classic silhouettes. Classic silhouettes have earned the description of classic for a reason—they’re timeless and versatile. Rather than always looking for cuts and overall design styles that feel trendy, think about investing in pieces that have great cuts that aren’t going to emphasize your problem areas but area instead going to streamline the look of your body and offer you a really good fit.
  3. If you find a retailer or designer you love, it’s a good idea to stick with that person whenever possible, particularly if you love that retailer or designer because they offer a great fit for your body. Not all plus-sized clothing is created equally and just with all fashion options, not everything is going to look good on everyone. When you find something that does work and fits your body like a glove, develop a loyalty to that designer.
  4. Watch where you have detailing on your clothes. This isn’t just true for plus-sized fashion girls—it’s true for everyone: you don’t want to choose items that are detailed at an area that you consider you be one of your problem areas or a place on your body you’re self-conscious about. For example, if you don’t love your stomach then try to find items that are simple and unified in that area.
  5. Think about scale when choosing items and accessories. If you’re a bit heavy and you choose a very small clutch the scale of your outfit is going to be off. That doesn’t mean you have to carry a duffle of course, but scale and proportion play a really big role in your body looks and how your clothes come across.
  6. Fabrics are incredibly important as well. Look for high-quality fabrics that have some structure with just a bit of stretch. You don’t want anything that’s going to have lots of frills or stretch strangely.
