How-To Guide: Styling Statement Necklaces

Statement jewelry and more specifically necklaces are one of the hottest and most stylish ways to add oomph to even the simplest of outfits, but because these pieces are so bold and eye-catching they can be difficult to style.

Statement jewelry is meant to be fun, but that doesn’t mean it should result in a fashion faux pas. Along with statement necklaces other pieces that commonly fall into the statement making category include rings and cuff bracelets as well as oversized earrings.

For now we’ll focus on the in’s and outs of styling statement necklaces for the next time you want to add a game-changing accessory without looking over-the-top.

  1. Pair statement necklaces with simple outfits. You never want to look too overdone or have people at a loss for where they should look when it comes to what you’re wearing. A statement necklace pairs beautifully with a simple dress that includes a clean, streamlined silhouette, or a monochromatic outfit, to add a pop of color.
  2. In addition to wearing an outfit that’s generally simple, try to especially focus on keeping the neckline area clear of other details that could make you look cluttered. For example, a statement or bib-style necklace probably isn’t going to work well with a blouse that has a bow or ruffles at the neck.
  3. When you’re selecting a statement necklace pay attention to the neckline of the outfit you’ll be wearing, because it does make a difference. The best types of clothing for a very bold statement necklaces are items with low, scooped necks or an off-the-shoulder cut.
  4. If you’re wearing a business-appropriate collared shirt you can actually incorporate your statement necklace into your outfit in a way that looks refined and as if your shirt and your necklace were made to go together. Button your shirt up to the top button and then tuck your necklace under your collar so just the middle is peeking out. It’s an ultra-chic and work-approved way to wear a statement necklace.
  5. In terms of other pieces of jewelry or accessories, a statement necklace is best left to stand on its own. In most cases if you’re doing a statement necklace it’s better to avoid other types of jewelry and in particular earrings, particularly if they fall at the neckline.
  6. Try to maintain a look that feels coordinated and cohesive. That doesn’t mean you have to put together a matchy-matchy outfit, but you should try to pick a statement necklace that goes with the overall feel and concept of everything else you’re wearing. For example, if you’re wearing a casual summer sundress you can go with a statement necklace that’s more playful and fun, whereas a dressier outfit or occasion may require a statement necklace that has a more subdued color palette or is made from materials like crystals and simple stones.
